Open Question: Free (professional) help for depression when self-help fails?
I’ve completely run out of options for fighting my depression. I’m currently in a state of mind where I can finally take the steps to get better, but I’m still having trouble. I need medication, but also cannot (and will not, for reasons I’m not discussing) tell my parents that I need help. The only way I can find to get medication is through my parents’ insurance, which inevitably leads to them finding out. I’ve been looking for a free clinic, but so far can’t find anything. If anyone has any tips on finding free help, I could really use it about now.
I’m 19, in college. My depression has been noticeable (to me) for around 3-4 years now, but has probably existed for at least 5. I’ve cut, abused painkillers, and have seriously contemplated suicide on many occasions. I have a very good friend that I’ve been talking to who has single-handedly saved my life twice. I can’t and won’t talk to my parents about it. They will find out in time, but that time is not in the near future. I’m stable enough to fight through the apathy for now, but I’m getting desperate to find a solution before it takes over again. I’ve been a little reluctant to resort to medication, due to the abuse noted above, but now I honestly think that it is the only solution. I’m in the 45219 area code, I need something close, as I don’t have a car. I would prefer a non-faith-based solution, but I know that those tend to be the people that care the most, so I won’t completely rule it out.
P.S. I don’t need any answers that tell me how much I have to live for or that my family and friends love me. I know all that already. I appreciate the sentiment, honestly, but that’s not what I’m looking for. I am at the point where I don’t want to die anymore. I just need a mode to live.
I am not on the university health insurance, I’m on my parents’, so I cannot use the school clinic. We do have a hospital that I have access to, but unless it’s an emergency (inevitable self-harm) I don’t think that it will be too much help.

Resolved Question: Serious help with my 19 year old son from parents w/ grown children?
My son will be 20 in a month and we are so worried about him. This is the hardest age that we’ve had to deal with. This may be long, but I need advice on how to handle this situation from other parents.
He’s taking 3 college classes 3 days a week (12 hours out of his free time), and just got a part-time job after not working at all for about 9 months and that happened after I finally told him that I was going to pull the internet and cable from his room if he didn’t get a job.
He’s not going to school half the time – including today. I went in and woke him to ask why he didn’t go today and all he said was “sick day”, although he wasn’t sick last night. We are only paying 1/2 of tuition and books and only pay that for the courses he completes with a passing grade.
He doesn’t want to do *anything* here and is angry (and shows it) whenever we ask him to do anything such as yard work, taking out the trash, etc. He throws attitude everytime we ask him to do something and makes rude remarks and then acts like he’s just kidding. This is so far from the way he used to be. He is very anti-drugs and anti-alcohol, so I don’t believe that’s an issue here.
He only has to pay his car insurance, so we’ve asked him to pay $200/mo to contribute to the house. We don’t need the money, but feel he needs some level of responsibility. Hubby and I still do all the cooking, all laundry, and all cleaning in the house. He doesn’t do any of that other than his bathroom.
My husband and I have been married for 8 years, and my sons real father killed himself 2 years ago. He’s been off and on of anti-depressants (normally back on when we ask him when he plans to get a job), so we’ve been worried to push him too much. However, something has to give here.
He obviously isn’t a kid, but not really an adult yet either. Parents of other grown children: What would you say is called for here? I already asked him once if he thought he’d be happier with an apartment since he seems so unhappy, but he says no. I also don’t want to threaten him with anything that he would consider being ‘kicked out’.
I love my son dearly, but am increasingly worried about his ability to deal with life and responsibility. What if something happened to us? We’re worried. Did you have these issues with your children and what did you do?
Sorry so long, but I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks.
I left that $200 a month comment unfinished. We ask for it, but he isn’t paying it. He always says ‘ok’ and then we never get it.
Thanks Bettina. We forced him to go to counseling after his dad died, but he was mad. After several appts, even the counselor said if he wasn’t open to counseling it was a waste of money. He wouldn’t even talk to the counselor and refused a different counselor.
jaded-I agree w/ some points but you sound judgemental. My husband is not annoyed-he loves our son & supports whatever he wants to do other than nothing.
We also have a 17 year old son still in HS so we aren’t trying to get him grown and out of the house. We want him at home, but not doing nothing at all. We couldn’t even get him to go to college at all the first year after he graduated. He didn’t want to work or go to school – he wanted to play video games all day. Because of the death of his dad, we gave him that time with no pressure of future plans. Only when the pattern of doing nothing continued, did we talk.
I know many people pay for everything for college, and many others do not. my ex husband left when they were 6 mo & 2 years. I had to work 2 jobs to make sure they had what they needed for several years, so a college fund wasn’t possible. Now we could pay for all if he were showing any responsibility. He isn’t going 1/2 the time now – who would pay for all?
