Open Question: Should I ask to be the beneficiary?
My 72 year old grandfather is very ill. He has a lot of life insurance policies scattered around. But, this is my real concern. My grandparents raised me since I was 4 months old. My grandmother passed away November 2007. She had bank accounts and a policy and the bank account money was given to my two aunts. They are 40 and 45 years old. I feel offended by that because, I was the one that lived with her up until and while she got sick. I was the one who used to lose sleep and wake up to her crying in pain. I suffered with her. When she passed, I lost my best friend. She passed away in front of me. My aunts only came around during the day when she was fine and fixed her dinner. But, I WAS THERE the whole time. When it came time to read her will, they didn’t let me know about when they were meeting the lawyer and later said to me, “oh yeah, you got her clothes, jewelry and furniture.” When I asked about her bank account, they looked shocked because they didn’t know that I knew about it. I got worldly things that I don’t need although I cherish them and they got money that could’ve helped me tremendously in life.

NOW…my grandfather (their father) is sick. All of a sudden, one of my aunts is VERY pushy. She is going behind his back (in my apartment that I share with him) while he is now in the hospital and searching through his safe and personal belongings. She mentioned that he wanted to be cremated and “i wanna know who is his beneficiary and executor of estate.” I don’t feel she should be the beneficiary at all. She’s a single 45 year old working woman with no children. I’m 22 years old, with debt that my birth mother created and I’m struggling on my own through school. I feel that I would best benefit from this if I was the beneficiary of his insurance policies. BESIDES, she was awarded money from my grandmother and she saving it for this “house” she claims she’s getting and she goes shopping all the time.

I’m depressed because of all of this. At times like this I would consult my grandma but, now I’m all alone and I’m not sure what I should do…
Some may view it as tacky but, I’m not meaning to sound money hungry. My grandfather is very secretive and we know he doesn’t have a will. It’s just that this one aunt that I have is being very pushy about money! She talking about how he never paid for a wedding so, she deserves something, she doesn’t want my uncle (who left home at 18 to join the military over 30 years ago) to have any money because he wasn’t around. I’m hurt by all of this because, I will be the one left alone with messed up credit and debt because of my birth mother using my social security number. My aunt just wants the money to buy a house and go shopping. Where as I need it to start a freaking life.
I know he should decide what he should do with his estate but, as a family I want him to know how I feel about the situation. And plus he doesn’t know she’s plotting by going through his stuff.

Open Question: Should I marry my boyfriend for the military benefits?
So here is my situation. I am 19 years old and my boyfriend is 20. We’ve been dating for about a year now and he’s always expressed interest in the military. Just recently he has decided to go active duty in the Army. I’m not worried about his safety as he is smart enough not to pick infantry or other dangerous MOS’s, but he will be gone for four years.

Right now I am in a lot of debt due to teenage irresponsibility and I work 40 hours a week making pretty pitiful wages. I’m enrolled in school part time but I’m really feeling the crunch because I don’t make enough money to take very many credits and it will take me years to earn even my associates.

His idea is for us to marry and for me to travel with him wherever he is based. The pros are that I will be close to him, I will have free housing, insurance, etc. AND I’ll be able to go to school for free/cheap. He tells me that he loves me and he doesn’t want to leave without me and that he’s happy that he can finally be able to take care of me like he should. (He’s recently unemployed and on a suspended license so I’m pretty much his sugar mama.)

However, I feel as if he is planning this without me. He already has our whole lives planned out: that we’re going to see the world, get educated, repair our finances, gain experience and responsibility and after his time is up we’ll come back home and start a life together here.

But here’s my problem. We’ve only been dating a year. I do love him, very much, and I know that he loves me, but I really don’t think we’re ready. We used to fight all the time, and true we’ve resolved those issues, but I still don’t feel that we’re ready for that step. His mother had an idea that we can just tie the knot in court for the benefits and then have an actual wedding ceremony a year or two later when we really feel emotionally prepared for marriage but I’m unsure.

Any advice? I would actually love to go. I’ve lived in the same town my whole life and I’m ready for something new. I’m a bit of a loner so I would do just fine when he’s gone for weeks at a time and I’d love to be able to just attend school and not have to worry about the finances. And I love him so much I couldn’t stand being without him for four years, especially since I’m in this rut right now.

I guess I’m just interested in some objective opinions, as my family is biased against it and his is biased towards it. I’m leaning towards it myself but I’m worried it would be a rash decision. Thoughts?
Oh and for the record, I’m not religous at all so for me marriage is not a “holy matrimony, til death do us part”, it’s a legal institution that just so happens to be practiced in our country. Strange maybe, but that’s how I feel. Thank you for your answers so far, though. :)
